I spent the afternoon trying to forget all of it: the interrogation room, the bargain, the cold look in Dominick’s eyes. I managed to get back to my desk with my hair straggling out of its up-do, and told Nate that I had thrown up.

“Are you okay?” For a moment, he looked like the friend he had once been, not the enemy he now was.

“Just…nervous, I think.” I tried not to let my sadness show in my face. I was going to miss being friends with Nate, in a weird way. “I haven’t been sleeping well.”

“Yeah, because you’ve been screwing instead.”

“Nate.” My voice came out sharper than I wanted. I was grateful, though: grateful he was making it easier and easier to get him out of my life. “Leave it.”

He tried to speak, but I sent him away with a shake of my head, and had a few hours of peace, at least. From him, anyway—I had involved myself in bribing a judge, and I tried not to think about that, either. I set to work with a single-minded intensity, skipping lunch and shooting off email after email to Emma. I didn’t bother to tell her that Dominick should be free soon—there was no way I should know, and in any case, I was telling myself that I didn’t care.

It wasn’t working very well.

Regardless of my feelings, the judge was prompt: Dominick was released a few hours later, a fact that came in a ripple of upheaval through the cubicles. Nate arrived back at my desk a few minutes later, his voice an urgent hiss.

“What the hell?”

I jumped. I had been listening to my iPod and hadn’t heard him come up behind me. Resolving never to do that again, I listened to the buzz of activity nearby and the sudden explosion of telephones ringing. It was well after 5PM, but no one had left yet. “What’s going on?”

“Dominick is out on bail.”

Luckily, I had already come up with a response to this. “I thought you said he was denied bail.”

“He was,” Nate snapped. He pulled himself together. “Not…I didn’t mean to yell. Are you feeling better?”

I narrowly avoided giving myself away with a “what?” and gave a noncommittal shrug instead as I remembered I was supposed to have been sick. I leaned forward to whisper before he had time to ask me any more questions. “So what happened?”

“The judge recused himself.” Nate was shaking his head. “Sebastian isn’t going to be happy. He—well, never mind. We need to come up with another plan.”

“Should we meet with him tonight?” I tried to sound casual, though the thought of meeting Sebastian suddenly sent fear spiking through me. He was the sort of man who would be searching for the reason the judge had recused himself, and what if someone told him about a red-haired girl delivering a briefcase to the judge’s apartment earlier that day?

Oh, God. He would murder me. My face went white and I gripped the arms of the chair.

“Cat?” Nate was bending over me.
